ABOUT US

The Zuolay Development Association is a US based 501©3 nonprofit organization rendering urgent social services to the people of Zuolay. Zuolay is a small town 15 miles north of Tappita City, Nimba County, Liberia. It is a town comprising of 15 villages of approximately 5,000 inhabitants.

The town Zuolay is the official headquarter of the Doe Clan, Tappita District, Nimba County, Liberia. It is approximately 7-8 hours driving distance from Monrovia, the capital City of Liberia. It inhabits about 3,000 residents and its neighboring villages and town with approximately 23,500 inhabitants, with no adequate medical clinics nor Hospitals to provide the needed healthcare to a population of over 25,000 people within the Doe Clan. These villages and towns as listed to the right do not have the proper medical facilities, hospitals and clean safe drinking water.

For 14 years, Liberia was ravaged by civil wars. After the war, health clinic was identified as a priority need by the Zuolay inhabitants. ZDA initiated the clinic project few years ago but has been stalled to multiple constraints, funding being the main issue.

The clinic will also have a training center to facilitate the training of health practitioners.  Moreover we envision in building a community center where community development workshops will be held. The aim is to keep the facility fully functional and safe for residents.

Liberia like any south Saharan nation faces growing health care crisis.  Malaria is a considerable health risk. According to Liberia’s Ministry of Health 2008 survey, malaria death rate was 110 per 1000 births. Tuberculosis’ death rate stood at 54 persons per 100,000 people, all ages. HIV prevalence is 1.7% in 15-49 age categories. Life expectancy is only 56. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Liberia ranks 7th in the world for highest rate of maternal mortality. In 2012 there was an infant mortality rate of 72.71 out of 1,000 births, in 2009 138.24 out of 1,000 and in 2006 there were 155.76 out of 1,000. Liberia is 18th in the world for infant mortality. Considering the above statistics there is an urgent need to improve the healthcare delivering system in Liberia this is why we are undertaking this project to build a clinic in one the remote parts of Liberia. The health of the population in the country will not dramatically change unless there are local preventive care interventions. With help from friends of Liberia and other partners, ZDA is prepared to work assiduously in improving the quality of life for our people.
